The Amazing Secret Rooftop Test Track

via Jalopnik

Period photo of Palacio Chrysler in Palermo Chico, Buenos Aires

In 1928, five years after Chrysler's current part-owners Fiat inaugurated their stunning Lingotto plant, Chrysler's Argentine distributors opened a magnificent building to assemble, check, sell... and race cars in Buenos Aires

The district of Palermo Chico in Buenos Aires is emphatically not where you’d expect to discover a automobile factory. Immediately northwest of posh Recoleta, it’s a place of tree-lined avenues, condo towers, men in polo shirts and suede moccasins, ladies eating purposefully small desserts. You could, in fact,  easily walk down Avenida  Figueroa Alcorta and pass the only building with a rooftop check track in South the united states without knowing it.
Period photo of Palacio Chrysler in Palermo Chico, Buenos Aires

Palacio Chrysler was built by the company of Argentine entrepreneur Julio Fevre, who had acquired the exclusive right to represent Chrysler in Argentina in 1927 after a decade & a half of importing American cars in to the country. The building was designed by Mario Palanti & occupied a complete city block in what was then a  sparsely built-up area of Buenos Aires. Period photographs show the building tower over townhouses & empty land. The column-lined facade housed an exhibition area, while the back & upper parts of the building were used for administrative offices, workshops, & storage areas.

But it was the upper deck that stole the show. Equipped with a check track of slightly over a mile long, it was used for testing cars & inviting the high society of Argentina to look at them: the inside of the track had a capacity for 3000 people.

We won't necessarily argue with an automaker (especially Lamborghini) unwrapping its new hotness from the inside out. Recently, they received a photograph of the Murciélago replacement's new pushrod suspension - something they were first discovered in the coursework of our talks with the Lamborghini's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Now, our intrepid spy photographers have snapped Lamborghni's new flagship, tentatively dubbed Aventador, wearing nothing but swirly camouflage over its newly redesigned body.

The new Lamborghini's beautiful bodywork takes lots of of its cues from the Sesto Elemento concept that debuted at the Paris Motor Show last year. Underneath the sexy exterior is the automaker's new V12 heart of gold, plus they ought to see the completed product in the flesh at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March. In the meantime, continue the striptease for yourself in our high-res gallery below.

The MkVI (sixth-generation) Volkswagen Golf has been around since 2009, and according to a document from Reuters, the next all-new Golf may be approaching sooner than they thought. According to a spokesperson for Volkswagen, the automaker will have the MkVII Golf prepared for public consumption by either the finish of 2012 or beginning of 2013.

Golf generational changes usually occur in much larger intervals, but this rapid introduction for the MkVII is a result of the Volkswagen Group's new cost-savings model architecture called MQB. Different makes and models that share the same underpinnings will be built in a similar manner to save giant percentages of money.

Noble M600 supercar finally enters production

Noble M600

Noble M600 - Click above for high-res image gallery

We've been speaking about the Noble M600 since roughly 2008. It was officially unveiled in 2009 plus the crew at Top Gear UK even got to check one before the clock ticked 2010. So where'd it go? they don't know, but Noble has eventually popped its head up again with the very first M600 off the factory production line.

thinking about its absence, a quick refresher work on the M600's credentials is in order. This British-built supercar sports a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter Yamaha V8 with two power levels: Road, Track plus Race. An Adaptable Performance Control switch will vary the V8's output between each level, letting the engine produce 450 brake horsepower, 550 bhp or an absolutely foolish 650 bhp. Couple that with a curb weight of  2,775 pounds, plus you've a great recipe for 0-60 times around two seconds or less plus an estimated top speed of 225 miles per hour. Only one's been built so far, but Noble claims it's orders for a full 50. At £200,000 a pop, the M600 ought to make the company a  penny assuming it doesn't take them a decade to deliver.

Officially Official: BMW announces 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo for U.S.

BMW 2.0-liter Turbo

BMW's four-cylinder turbocharged engine - Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW has been teasing us with tiny factoids here and there about its new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and we finally have official confirmation that it will, in fact, be coming to the United States later this year.

This new four-cylinder engine makes use of the same twin-scroll turbo expertise present in the larger N55 3.0-liter engine. maximum power is rated at 240 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, and peak torque - all 260 pound-feet of it - is delivered at 1,250 rpm. By switching to a smaller-displacement, turbocharged, direct-injected engine, we can expect that cars with this new 2.0-liter four will get a healthy bump in fuel economy over the current six-cylinder models.

BMW has yet to point out which models will be getting the new 2.0-liter turbo, but since the automaker specifically mentions that it offers more power and torque than the current naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six, we wouldn't be shocked to learn that all cars with a 28i or 30i at the end of the name will now be powered by this four-pot mill. Earlier reports have suggested that the Z4 sDrive30i will now use four-cylinder power, and we're betting both the 1 and 3 Series, as well as X1, will get the turbo-four treatment. Pagani's All-New V12 Huayra Supercar

After months if not years of speculation and anticipation, niche automaker Pagani has revealed the successor to the Zonda in the type of the Huayra you see here. The name and styling -  the gaping maw at the front - have been the subject of some controversy, but there's no arguing with the performance potential.

Behind those gull-wing doors that swing upwards to gain access to a sumptuously appointed interior of leather, aluminum and carbon fiber sits a 6-liter twin-turbo V12 engine courtesy of Mercedes AMG, producing over 700 horsepower and 740 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with a curb weight of less than 3,000 lbs, and we're taking a look at a top speed in excess of 230 miles per hour.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage S

lovers know and love the Aston Martin Vantage, but it's a bit of a curiosity. The smallest automobile in the company's catalog can be had with its smallest engine in the V8 Vantage, or its largest in the V12 Vantage. But now Aston has bridged the gap with the new V8 Vantage S.

Its 4.7-liter V8 engine has been tuned up to 430 horsepower, mated to a seven-speed sequential transmission. The steering has also been returned, the brakes upgraded and the aerodynamics optimized with new vents and carbon fiber front splitter. As with the existing V8 Vantage but unlike the V12 model, the V8 Vantage S can be had in either coupe or roadster body-styles.

F1 Racing's 2020 projection - Click above for high-res images
Think of what a future F1 race car might look like and you're likely to conjure up images similar to the Red Bull X1 prototype. But the fact is, in all likelihood, an F1 car nine years from now will look  much like the ones they see today. After all, how radically different are contemporary F1 racers from the ones they saw a decade ago?

you can expect some significant changes to come in to effect, though, over the approaching decade, as the sport grapples with finding the sweet-spot in terms of spectacle, environmental friendliness and the like. Speaking with Renault F1 designer Pat Symonds, F1 Racing journal came up with their projection. It takes in to account such anticipated features as low-profile tires on larger wheels, ground-effect aerodynamics returning to replace the downforce reduced by the standardized rear wing and a beefier Kintetic Energy Recovery method cool for a 250 horsepower boost.

Of coursework all these projections could show way off by the time 2020 rolls around, but they could show spot on. We'll  must keep watching to find out. meanwhile you can see the only one images which the publication has released, or head to the newsstand to see more.

Final Numbers: 2011 Detroit Auto Show was bigger than 2010 in every way

via Autoblog

Detroit Auto Show

The 2011 North American International Auto Show wasn't exactly chock-full of game-changing new product, but that didn't keep the media & public from making it a much bigger success than the 2010 show. Crain's Detroit Business reports that the 2011 Detroit Auto Show held 5,000 members of the international media in the work of press days & 21,000 guests (5,000 over in 2010) in the work of the two-day industry preview. The annual charity preview saw another 10,500 guests, raising $2.6 million for charity.

That's excellent news, but the top headlines for the struggling Detroit area are reserved for the $325 to $350 million in total estimated economic impact - about $25 million over in 2010. A grand total of 735,370 members of the general public bought tickets to NAIAS; up 20,000 from the 2010 show. Now that's definitely a step in the right direction.

Next up are the engine & exhaust method upgrades (€6,048), which help boost output to 600HP & 580Nm of peak torque. Stopping power can be further improved with MOV´IT-CER ceramics brake calipers, but at a ludicrous cost of €21,990.

Those sexy looking alloy wheels sized 20-inch up front & 21-inch at the back with Dunlop Sport Maxx tires are priced at €4,599, while the tune is done with an aluminum coil-over suspension for €7,349.

Pagani Huayra makes its official web debut

via Autoblog

Pagani Huayra
Pagani Huayra - Click above for high-res image gallery

After taking a look at our high-res image gallery below, they were tempted to say the Pagani Huayra made its o-fish-ial web debut... but they won't. Oh, wait.

In any case, Pagani's newest supercar can now be seen in all its glory, and they usually approve of the general styling, despite the fact it's got something of a bottom-feeder fascia up front. Moving past that, they see a  serious set of gullwing doors and  slats, flares and strakes to fill the sketchbook of a Boeing designer.

All those aero aids will certainly come in handy when all the fury of the Mercedes-Benz AMG-built 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine is unleashed on the unlucky pair of rear tires - the Huayra is said to be able to speeds up near 230 miles per hour.

Over 700 horsepower and about 740 pound-feet of torque will be sent to the ground through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Couple that with a weight of  under 3,000 pounds - aided by copious amounts of carbon fiber - and you have the makings of a 21st century rear-wheel drive rocket ship.

Inside you'll find all the luxury touches you'd expect, including a cockpit slathered in stunning hides and exposed aluminum and carbon fiber. You'll also bask in the glowing blue gauges and multi-function display that controls audio, navigation and communications gadgetry.

Chinese women buying disproportionate percentage of exotic cars?

via Autoblog
Maserati GranTurismo

The number of Chinese millionaires is growing quickly, and women account for a third of that rising, prosperous population. This is lovely news to exotic car manufacturers because rich Chinese women are snatching them up like french pastries.

Sales of high-end automobiles rose 60 percent last year and analysts are already pegging a 35 percent climb for 2011. Maserati reports that 30 percent of its Chinese sales are to women, compared against  10 percent for European sales. China is now on track to pass france as the automaker's second largest market.

It's not  Maserati, either; Ferraris and Lamborghinis are being bought in gigantic numbers. The rich women of China account for 20 percent of local Ferrari sales, which is double the global average. The rise in exotic vehicle sales has even gotten the attention of Bugatti, and the Volkswagen Group is now discussing a feasible sales plan for China.
Thanks for the tip, Art!

Ridelust Oddity: 1975 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Shooting Brake

via RideLust
Ferrari 365 Shooting Brake

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is to this day one of the most recognizable Ferrari’s ever created and was produced from 1968 to 1973. Made famous by movies like the Gumball 3000 and tv shows like Miami Vice, the Ferrari GTB/4 (or Daytona) has also been permanently embedded in popular culture. The automobile held to a traditional front engine rear drive layout with a 352 hp V12 up front that was mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Top speed was over 170 mph with a 0-60 mph time of around 5.4 seconds. For some it’s the ultimate GT automobile and for others, it’s basically the automobile from that cop show in the 1980′s. regardless of the case, there's no denying that the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is one of the most beautifully sculpted Ferrari’s ever crafted.

Ferrari 365 Shooting Brake

There was one individual however, Luigi Chinetti, Jr., who felt that the 365GTB/4 could in fact be improved on. In 1975 Chinetti, with the help of a gentlemen by the name of Gene Garfinkle, created a layout for the automobile you see here – the Ferrari 365GTB/4 Shooting Brake. The automobile was built by a company called Panther Westwinds who can be present in the U.K. and features modifications other than  the addition of the elongated rear half.

Ferrari 365 Shooting Brake
All the gauges for example have moved to the cars middle stack and are slightly angled towards the driver. The rear deck has been treated to rich wood panelling with the body being done in gloss black paint. Personally, I don’t take care of this creation, but then again, it’s not my automobile. What this automobile is however is an interesting conversation piece for those who like to reckon outside the box.

Baldwin-Motion is Back: 2011 Camaro SS Phase III

via RideLust

MOTION Phase III SC-427 Supercar

Tuners & hot rod shops have been souping up & modifying the Chevrolet Camaro since its rebirth in 2009. Back in the late 1960s & early 1970′s the Camaro was a pure road beast. Tuners would take factory showroom cars & alter them into full-on supercars. It’s now 44 years later & it seems as though nothing has changed as the blokes from Baldwin Motion, one of the original tremendous tuners, have now  released the specs for their new 2011 Camaro SS Phase III cars.

MOTION Phase III SC-427 Supercar
According to Joel Rosen, the legendary founder of Baldwin Motion,
“We have re-launched the Baldwin-Motion and MOTION brands again, this time capturing the true spirit of what we did in 1967-1974: Market built-to-order, dyno-proven and warranted SS & Phase III 427 & 454 Camaros, crafted by a high-tech dyno shop and available exclusively from a single authorized Chevrolet dealer.”

If by any chance you still haven't seen the new 6-Series Convertible in the flesh and are not satisfied by the first first batch of 133 photos released by the Bavarian automaker last November, BMW has  published a huge gallery of its soft top cabriolet, photographed in South Africa. The Germans also added a few shots of a 6-Series Individual, which is a special program that provides customers additional bespoke options to reflect their individuality.

As a reminder, there's five engines available for the new 6 Series Convertible at launch. The 640i gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six with 320-horses & 450Nm / 332 lb-ft of peak torque, lovely  to propel the four-seater model from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds.

The 650i boasts a 4.4-liter turbo V8 producing 407HP & 600Nm / 443 lb-ft, & completes the standard dash in 5.0 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Touring Superleggera ramps up production of Bentley Flying Star

via Autoblog

Bentley shooting brake, somebody? Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera can hook you up. The Milanese coachbuilder unveiled the Flying Star at last year's Geneva Motor Show, & stole our hearts in the process. But since the shooting brake debuted & its order books opened, Touring has only made three examples of the custom creation.

No wonder, as the coachbuilder says it takes 4,000 man-hours to transform a Continental GTC (still the outgoing model, they gather) in to the long-roofed coupe. But thanks to increased investment in the kind of new equipment & staff, Touring can now reportedly be working on up to five vehicles at a time.

Each example still takes three months to deliver, with total production limited to 19 examples. Fortunate buyers can specify from a range of customizations, including the twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 in states of tune ranging from 552 horsepower (base) to 621 (Supersports).

Lotus Type 125 makes its track debut

via Autoblog

Lotus Exos Type 125

Lotus has taken the time to put its new civilian Formula One racer through its paces. The company enlisted the help of both Jean Alesi & James Rossiter to check the Exos Type 125 in its first official track outing. Rossiter serves as the company's official check driver, so he's been in the chair of some  wild machines. Even so, the racer says that the Type 125 is "unique, intense &  raw." On top of that, Rossiter claims the open-wheel beast is as close as a mortal human can get to man-handling the tiller of a actual F1 automobile.

There's no surprise there. The Type 125 packs a 3.5-liter Cosworth V8 at its core with 650 horsepower. The miracle mill is strapped to a six-speed semiautomatic gearbox, & Lotus says that all it takes to wake the beast is a push of the beginning button. That means that owners won't need their own personal squad of mechanics  to get out of the paddock. in case you like the sound of this machine as much as they do, you better know anybody at Lotus. The company is only planning on handing out 15 examples of the Type 125. Hit the jump for the press release.

Officially Official: Mazda Minagi Concept headed to Geneva

Mazda Minagi Concept

The idea wears the new Mazda design theme called Kodo, or soul of motion. From what they can see from the renderings, the look is a full galaxy ahead of the all smiles design the Japanese automaker is currently employing. We'll have an interest to see how the lines translate to the genuine world when the idea shows up at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Mazda has dropped the official details on the company's Minagi idea. The sleek CUV is intended to give us all a tiny taste of exactly where Mazda's design is headed in the near future as well as show off the company's new Skyactiv drivetrain technologies. Mazda isn't telling us exactly what's under that sculpted hood other than to say that the Minagi gets its power from a Skyactiv engine and puts it to the ground by a Skyactiv transmission. In addition to those fuel-saving parts, Mazda claims that the Minagi also makes use of a host of weight-saving tricks to boost fuel economy.

Rumormill: Subaru hybrid headed to U.S. in 2013

Subaru hybrid concept

Subaru finally appears prepared to enter the hybrid segment. Unsurprising thinking about the numerous rumors and reports that the Japanese automaker, which has strong ties with Toyota, aims to launch it first hybridized vehicle by the finish of 2012. However, Subaru's tight-lipped approach prevents us from confirming what vehicle the automaker will use to introduce its hybrid to the world. preliminary speculation puts the fuel-sipping know-how in to either the Legacy or Impreza platform. Regardless, Reuters claims that Subaru's hybrid is U.S.-bound.

On the sidelines of this year's Detroit Auto Show, Reuters prodded Tom Doll, chief operating officer of Subaru of the united states, seeking insight in to the automaker's hybrid designs. Doll said, "We're going to need something at some point, even (only) to say they've it because that enhances our brand picture in the market." Though Subaru has not officially confirmed the launch of a hybrid vehicle, Reuters reports that the fuel-sipping auto will be released in 2012 and maintains that the U.S. will witness the debut of the first Subaru hybrid model in 2013.

Report: Mitsubishi building crossovers and sedans Stateside in two years

2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Despite posting a three-percent increase in sales year-over-year in 2010, Mitsubishi is struggling here in the United States. The huge majority of the products in the automaker's portfolio are slow-sellers, with only the Lancer & Outlander families gaining much in the way of high praise from both the media & consumers similar. Still, Mitsubishi has designs to soldier on, & a document from Automotive News states that the Japanese automaker is looking to shift production of a few of its sedans & crossovers to the United States within the next two years.

Currently, the automaker's plant in Normal, new york builds the Galant, Endeavor & Eclipse, but these vehicles are scheduled to be phased out by 2013. Moving forward, Mitsubishi's new relatives of vehicles based on the platform that underpins the Lancer, Outlander & Outlander Sport - vehicles that are currently built in Japan - will be assembled in new york. Currently, Mitsubishi has not cited any designs to generate replacements for any of the outgoing models currently built here in america.
